Wisdom of Aging

Wisdom of Aging is a movement for aware and engaged aging.

Wisdom of Aging opens up the conditions and space to explore the experience of aging, in all its aspects; the development of affordable and supportive housing within the community; volunteering and solidarity across all age groups; and the promotion of the universal right to grow old and to die at home with dignity and wellbeing, with the provision of holistic healthcare.

Love says 'I am everything.' Wisdom says 'I am nothing.' Between these two, the current of my life flows. // Nisargadatta

The aim of Wisdom of Aging is to dispel the prevailing prejudice about the natural process of aging; to shed the light of mindfulness on reality as it is; to open up an awareness of our experience, whether pleasant or unpleasant, to an understanding that everything changes and passes and that we become who we are from moment to moment in our relationship to our world; and to a realization that it is possible to ease suffering by releasing attachments and perceptions.

Wisdom of Aging draws on the wisdom of the dharma – the ancient wisdoms of the East – that it is possible to face the existential angst of our being subject to birth, sickness, aging and death, with equanimity, dignity and grace.

To investigate aging with a compassionate, courageous and curious heart

To open to life with an open heart and be an inspiration for those around us

The Wisdom of Aging movement offers a wide range of group activities across the country: meditation and contemplation, discussions and sharing, study and training, experiential creative learning.  Among the programs available:  'Being With’ the elderly restricted to their homes; and 'Let's Talk About It' – supporting and planning end of life care.

Wisdom of Aging, founded by Carmel Shalev and Rachel Shkedy in 2013,  is supported by a diverse advisory body of volunteers.
